Being one of
the first police department motorcycle units in the United
States is notable enough, but Detroit's division celebrates
it's 100th anniversary this year.
The Detroit
Police Department's motorcycle unit filled their ranks with
Harley-Davidson motorcycles
and as many as two hundred officers in the Motorcycle Squad,
as they were known. Harley Davidson is also celebrating it's
100th anniversary of supplying law enforcement agencies with
motorcycles.
Today, there about 30 in the Detroit Police Department
Traffic Enforcement Motor Unit, with the majority in traffic
enforcement as well as providing escorts for funerals and
parades, such as last week's Red Wings Stanley Cup
celebration.
The
motorcycle unit was created in 1908 as part of an effort to
quickly respond throughout the city.
A small
celebration took place in Detroit on Saturday in
celebration. |
