First Look - 2016 Indian Motorcycles Lineup

JUL 29, 2015 - As it has done in years past, Indian Motorcycles is using the larger than life event of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally to roll out its Model Year 2016 bikes.

Fresh off of record year to date sales results and overwhelming demand for both the Indian Scout and the recently introduced 2016 Indian Chief Dark Horse, Indian Motorcycle is hoping to rumble into the 75th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally with motorcycle chatter and curiosities.

If the continuing bold designs in the new line up are anything to go by, they’ll have no issues causing the intended stir. The style remains largely unchanged with a lot of sweeping lines, enclosed areas and an interesting blend of reaching back to designs that made the Indian legacy earn so many diehard fans while still moving down the road into a more modern look.

What appears to be the darling of Indian Motorcycles, the Scout rides out first in our look at the fresh paint and updated designs.

The 2016 Indian Scout ABS is the American motorcycle manufacturer’s middle-weight cruiser weighing in at a dry 558 pounds and hopes to tap into its decades-long legacy of superb balance, precise handling and potent performance that dominated the Wall of Death and conquered the Bonneville Salt Flats.

‘With its compact design and low 25.3-inch seat height, the Indian Scout is the perfect multipurpose bike for virtually any rider,’ Indian Motorcycles states in its press release.

Featuring a liquid-cooled 69 cubic inch V-twin engine, 100 HP of performance, a Gloss Black starts at $10,999 while a starting price of $11,299 has been set for the Thunder Black Smoke, Silver Smoke and the striking new Wildfire Red versions.

The new Indian Scout is now available with anti-lock brakes (ABS). Throw in the Indian Motorcycle Red paint and you have a price tag of $11,999. All 2016 Indian Scout models come with a genuine leather solo seat, and feature a cast aluminum chassis for superior handling and overall balance.

New to the line-up is an additional model in the cruiser class, the 2016 Indian Chief Dark Horse joins the Chief Classic. Featuring a matte black finish from end-to-end and only a flash of chrome, this bike certainly catches the eye and makes a statement simply standing still.

Enjoying a low seat height and the lowest price for any Thunder Stroke 111 powered Indian, the Dark Horse starts at just $16,999. The 2016 Indian Chief Dark Horse promises styling, reliability and the power expected from an Indian Motorcycle, but adds a heathy dose of attitude. Propelled by 119 ft/lbs of torque and the same chassis and suspension of the award-winning Indian Chief Classic, the Dark Horse rolls with standard ABS, a remote key fob for keyless ignition, electronic cruise control, and features a two-year unlimited mileage factory warranty.

As we’re rolling into the Chief lineup of models, let’s take a closer look at what Indian is offering for their larger motorcycles.

Powered by the proven Thunder Stroke 111 engine and covered in premium chrome, the Indian Chief family delivers what Indian is calling ‘the impeccable styling and sophisticated performance of the Chief Classic; the classic looks, beautiful fringed leather saddle bags and paint schemes of the Chief Vintage, and the cruising comfort and exceptional handling of the Indian Chieftain hard bagger’.

The major reason Indian rolls out its new models at the legendary rally is to take advantage of the many Sturgis attendees. Local papers have estimates as high as one million riders could attend the 75th anniversary.

This is good news for Indian Motorcycles who will have the new model lineup at their Motorcycle factory display on Lazelle Street. For those wanting to test ride the new motorcycles, factory demo rides will be available at 2100 Whitewood Service Road (I-90 at Exit 30) from Saturday, August 1 – Saturday, August 8, starting at 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily.

In addition to stock motorcycles, accessorized units will be on hand to experience comfort and performance items.
