Ducati's New Monsters As Sexy As Ever

The other new models in Ducati’s 2017 line-up maybe stealing the spotlight, but there will always be love for the Italian motorcycle manufacturer’s Monster. Here’s what the new models look like.

The Monster was an immediate hit when first presented in 1992 at the Cologne fair and over the years it’s gone on to become a motorcycling icon. A core feature of the Monster family is the high-capacity steel fuel tank that enhances its powerful character. Emphasized by its thin flanks and the incredibly compact front headlight, the outline of the Monster resembles that of a charging bull. A clean, minimalist handlebar zone underscores the bike's essential style, while close attention to detail is evident in the high-quality finish.

Now Ducati delivers what it considers a full Monster 'family' that has something for every motorcyclist.

Monster 1200 S in action - Source Ducati

The Monster 1200 R, the most sports-oriented naked bike to come off the Ducati production line joined the Monster 1200, and 1200 S and completes the range. Looking to the 821 cc version of the naked bike, riders can choose from a brand new Dust Grey color, and the 821 Stripe.

The Monster family also offers a broad range of engines. Before looking at the raw statistics of the engines, Ducati is quick to promote the new, longer maintenance intervals. As with the other engines in its line-up Ducati boasts 9,000 miles between services and valve clearance adjustments every 18,000 miles.

As far as the engines in the Monster range, the twin-cylinder 821 Testastretta 11° delivers 112 hp @ 9250 rpm and a maximum torque of 9.1 kgm (66 lb-ft)@ 7750 rpm. The Testastretta 11° DS on the Monster 1200 comes in three different versions:

  • 135 hp @ 8750 rpm with 12 kgm (87 lb-ft) @ 7250 rpm on the standard model;
  • 145 hp @ 8750 rpm and 12.7 kgm (92 lbft) @ 7250 rpm on the S version and
  • 160 hp @ 9250 rpm and 13.4 kgm (97 lb-ft) @ 7750 rpm on the R version.

When it comes to the Monster chassis, Ducati uses the most advanced design techniques it has ever developed. The iconic Trellis frame remains a central design feature, with the attachment points positioned directly on the cylinder heads, a technique already implemented on the Panigale Superbike. The Monster frame is extremely compact. Large-diameter steel tubing ensures a combination of optimal torsional strength and minimal weight.

Vehicle dynamics are controlled by cutting-edge electronics that include the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP). The Ducati Safety Pack features ABS and Ducati Traction Control, plus Ducati Riding Modes, which allow the rider to combine power delivery, ABS and Traction Control in three different ways to give the Monster an Urban, Touring or Sport feel to match both riding conditions and preferred riding style.
