.DEC 03, 2015 - If a news-cycle were a road, when Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati unveiled its latest line up at EICMA, it not only filled it, but stretched out for as far as the eye could see

Months of teasing, spy-photos and page after page of press releases promising to awe the motorcycle world came together in December when Ducati took to the EICMA stage to reveal its hard work and efforts.

Titled ‘More than Red: Black, Wild and Pop’ the Ducati World Première 2016 streamed live around the world and was reportedly viewed by followed by thousands of people. In a way, it was the event that kicked off the 73rd edition of the International Motorcycle Show to be held at the Milan-Rho trade fair from November 19th to 22nd.

The Ducati World Première 2016 showcased several new bikes: two new Ducati Scramblers, the Flat Track Pro version and the all-new Sixty2; the new Hypermotard 939, Hypermotard 939 SP and Hyperstrada 939 family; the new Panigale 959; the Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak; the new Multistrada 1200 Enduro and the eagerly awaited XDiavel.

We now know, the “black” world cited in the title of the Ducati World Première 2016 referred to the XDiavel. Aside from all the hard details found in its specifications, Ducati changed this motorcycle’s address, firmly placing it into the cruiser segment with not only bike itself but what was said as well.

The press release noted ‘this intriguing new bike sees Ducati enter the Cruiser world in its own inimitable way by presenting a true cruiser that has all the design, technology and performance one expects from a Ducati thoroughbred’. Not only has the Italian motorcycle manufacturer put the Diavel on a new road, it’s given this latest model a new name. Calling it the XDiavel, Ducati feels it brings together two worlds: the Cruiser world of low speeds, relaxed riding and long journeys and the Ducati world, characterized by Italian style, refined engineering and unparalleled performance.

Ducati's video promoting its XDiavel

The XDiavel offers both the “low speed excitement” that comes from the relaxed riding and further-forward footpegs typical of a cruiser and the adrenaline rush of sports riding that Ducati has made its own. That's what the X in XDiavel stands for: the merging of two apparently separate, distant worlds on one bike, a superb combination where both are accomplished without compromise.

Before readers feel they’ve fallen into an episodic recap of LOST, the cult television show, Ducati refers to three numbers to highlight the XDiavel; 5,000, 60, 40.

  • 5,000 as in the rpm at which the new twin-cylinder 156 hp Ducati Testastretta DVT 1262 engine achieves maximum torque (13.1 kgm).
  • 60 as in the number of different ergonomic configurations for the rider.
  • Lastly, 40, as in the maximum attainable lean angle.

The various adjustments of equipment allowing for the cruiser riding positions as well as the XDiavel being the first Ducati to use belt-type final transmission, considered by many a must within the Cruiser world, all point to a clear intention of where this motorcycle wants to live.

Aside from the promised performance, another sure indicator this motorcycle came from the Ducati drawing board is seen in all the technology the model features. The Bosch Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), together with Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Riding Modes, Bosch Cornering ABS, Cruise Control and the innovative Ducati Power Launch (DPL) system, make the XDiavel a technological gem offering high performance and safety.

Ducati noted during the presentation an S version of the XDiavel is also available.

The XDiavel enjoys its own section of the web and its easy to see what image Ducati wants to paint for this cruiser. Indeed, the immediate phrase vistors are greeted with is 'The gentleman, The bastard', which we're assuming indicates its mixed background.

This and the other motorcycles revealed at the event puts Ducati on the radar of a lot more motorcycle manufacturers. In a way, this event inducts the Italian motorcycle manufacturer into a semi-exclusive club, riding among those which have a range of bikes to attract a larger demographic to their rides.

Earlier this year Triumph, Royal Enfield and other manufacturers which focused on the retro-styled motorcycles had Ducati ride in on its Scrambler as worthy competition. With the XDiavel and Multistrada 1200 Enduro, other motorcycle names such as Yamaha, Honda and Harley-Davidson can all now consider Ducati breathing down their leather-collared necks.
