Reservations are being taken for a pre-planned tour scheduled for September 22, 2017 and promises to take riders through famous sites and history known by many. While it is officially a motorcycle vacation in Greece, it could be presented as a trip through Greek mythology from the seat of a saddle. The latter might more easily sell the idea to non-riders.
You can thank us later.
The eleven day tour has nine of those days in the saddle laying down a total of 1,368 miles. The longest day will be just under seven hours with organizers suggesting riders have at least an intermediate skill level.
Starting in the town of Thessaloniki, the Greece Motorcycle Tour will cover some of the best motorcycle roads in the country as well as ancient sanctuaries and protected heritage sites. The tour follows the route of Alexander the Great to Dion Archeological Park at the foot of Mount Olympus, rides on Greece’s highest mountain and snakes south to the city of Gods, Athens. A ride along Gulf of Corith north of Pelopponese Peninsula and crossing Rio-Antirrio Bridge, considered an engineering marvel, will offer amazing views.
As mentioned, the ride includes a trip to the highest mountain in Greece, home for mythological Greek Gods and being called the Mount Olympus Ride. A visit to Meteora, a complex of Greek Monasteries and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Riders will head to Delphi, which was home of ancient Oracle of Apollo. This Greek legend is used in many movies and the small but interesting area is packed with history and amazing stories, some familiar and others not.
The capital of Greece, Athens isn’t only home to the world famous Parthenon but the site of the first Olympics. There’s even a modern statue dedicated to the story behind the modern marathon!
However, it’s a busy and loud city so bikers should definitely ride defensively when anywhere near Athens.
Somewhat quieter and included on the tour, a ride on the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges, an engineering masterpiece, the Rio-Antirrio Bridge.
Getting the great riding portion in, a trip to Tzoumerca National Park which offers bends for a lifetime, stone bridges and traditional Greek villages.
These different rides will be mostly on paved roads with a small section seeing some gravel.
Participants will have the chance to ride BMW motorcycles in the GS range, BMW G650GS, BMW F800GS or BMW R1200GS LC. Riders can upgrade to BMW F800GS or BMW R1200GS for an extra cost and all motorcycles should be fairly new. Accommodation comes in the form of three and four star hotels chosen either for their location to the reason for the day’s ride or by the view.
As per the press release, the tour will be escorted by ‘an enthusiast English speaking motorbike leader’ and followed by a support car transporting the luggage, driven by the mechanic of the company, all in order to insure the rider’s safety and smooth riding.
Traditional Greek food and drinks will complete the motorcycle odyssey to the land of the mythological Greek Gods and this in itself is usually worth the price of admission. Price’s start at 2849 euro per rider with BMW G650GS motorcycle with upgrade fees applicable.
